For over 1,500 years, the real toquilla straw palm has grown along Ecuador's Manabí coast, and every genuine hat is still hand-woven in Montecristi and Pile by a single artisan — no machines, no molds, no shortcuts. Some pieces take up to six months to finish.
The mix-up dates back to the Panama Canal era, when hats exported through the isthmus picked up a name that stuck — a misnomer history never corrected. What hasn't changed is where the skill actually lives: in Ecuadorian hands.
